Long-Pulsed Nd:YAG Laser Hair Removal:
Laser hair removal has revolutionised the treatment of unwanted hair. The bright red laser light heats dark hair follicles and suppresses their growth at the blood supply. All parts of the body can be treated, underarms, bikinis, legs, shoulders, abdomen, back & face. Several treatments are required and best results are achieved with dark hair. It will not work with white hair, grey, red or blonde. We use a long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser, and can treat all skin colours. Different areas of the body and different skin types give different results.
Who is suitable for Laser Hair removal
Our lasers suit anyone with dark unwanted hair best. White, blonde, red and grey hairs will not respond. Ginger and pale brown hairs respond poorly. Dark brown and black hairs do best. The Nd:YAG laser works on all skin colours unlike many other lasers on the market and that’s why here at Miracle Clinic we believe it’s the best. We offer our treatment to men and women on all body parts. We cannot treat you if you have a fake tan or even a faint tan. Laser treatment does not mix well with sunny holidays, which means you must have a 2 week gap pre and post holiday to be able to have the laser treatment.
Is Laser hair removal treatment permanent
No, we do not claim permanence. This is permanent hair reduction. Hair follicles have great regenerative powers, most people will have long lasting benefits. The stronger the laser the greater the effect is on the hair. Regular treatment also improves results as you are managing to catch the different stages of the hair growth. A minimal recommend a course is 6 sessions. However, if you want more of a permanent result a course of 8 – 12 is needed. It is difficult to predict individual responses as many factors are involved such as the thickness of the hairs, different body sites, hormonal differences, how black the hairs are and how strong a laser light can be tolerated. In general, the hair free intervals gradually lengthen and regrowth gets more sparse and fine. After the first session you will get up to 40% reduction in hair growth.
How does Laser compare to other hair removal treatments
Laser treatment gives longer hair-free intervals than waxing, shaving, plucking, or depilatory creams. It can treat more hairs than electrolysis due to the size of the laser beam. Laser is a much stronger pulse light compared to IPL (Intense Pulse Light) and can work on all skin colours as opposed to the IPL system.
Is Laser hair removal safe
The laser makes an extremely powerful beam of red light. This can blind or burn if used wrongly. Care is taken to protect eyes by limiting the number of people in the treatment room and wearing protective goggles during treatments. The strength of the laser must be carefully adjusted for each client. The Nd:YAG keeps the skin surface chilled with cold air throughout the whole treatment and if needed after.
How does Laser hair removal work
The bright laser light heats up hair that has a strong pigment. The hair follicles can be damaged by heating up the black hairs in them. Most of the follicles on your body are resting and hairless at any one time, these resting follicles are not affected by the laser light. However by repeating the treatment with each new cycle of hair growth eventually most follicles will be lasered. A treated follicle takes longer to recover. The technique depends on there being more dark pigment in your hair than in your skin, so that the hair follicles can be heated whilst the skin is kept cool. This is why most unwanted effects occur in darker skin types. Recently suntanned skin is particularly vulnerable to dark marks. Fake tans will also cause problems.
What type of lasers are used
Most lasers and intense pulsed light sources will give good hair reduction in suitable patients when used correctly. We use an Nd:YAG long pulsed laser.
Are there unwanted effects of laser hair removal
There is some discomfort, which is brief and can be relieved with the cold air. The treated area will be red and may have goose bumps for an hour or so depending on how sensitive your skin is. The skin may feel sensitive for a day or two so we recommend to keep the area cool (so no hot showers or baths and avoid exercise). Some peeling or scabbing may occur with temporary changes in skin colour, usually in the form of dark marks. Rare unwanted effects include scarring, patchy loss of skin pigment, loosening of dental veneers and thrombosis of small veins.
How strong should the treatment be
The stronger the treatment the better the results on the hair but there may be more unwanted effects on the skin. With high power treatment these consist of redness, swelling and tenderness for a few days. On darker skin types dark circles may form for a week or two. These occasionally fade to leave pale marks that last for many months. We will be guided by you as to how strong you would like your treatment.
What preparation is required before laser treatment
It is very important that you stop plucking and waxing for at least 2 weeks before starting treatment. You can trim or shave. We know this may be difficult for you but is important for good results. You must also resist plucking hairs between treatments. Fake tan must have faded completely.
What after care is needed
Immediately after the treatment we will apply Aloe Vera gel to soothe the area you can use Aloe Vera for a few days after your treatment to soothe and moisturize the skin. You should also get into the habit of wearing a strong sun block on exposed areas. This should be factor 30 or stronger. This applies to all skin colours and is very important. If your skin darkens a little in the summer or while on holiday, then you will be more likely to get burnt at your next treatment.
Who is responsible for my care
Your treatment will be carried out by our fully qualified team of Aestheticians who will care for you during your course.
It is difficult to predict exactly how well treatment will work as there are wide variations depending on body area, skin colour, hair colour and strength of treatment. As a guide, women with white skin and black hair treating underarms, bikini and legs should have very scant regrowth after 4-6 treatments. Women with black facial hair and white skin should achieve good control, with hair free periods of 6 – 8 weeks and scant regrowth after 6 treatments. You may want occasional top up treatments but these are not necessarily needed for all cases. Brown and ginger hair will not do as well. White and blonde hairs will not respond. Women with brown skin should achieve hair free periods of 4-6 weeks on the face and 8-12 weeks elsewhere. Regrowth will be finer but is likely to be persistent. After 6 treatments women with black skin and African type hair should be hair free on the face for about 8 weeks. Elsewhere on the body the hair free period will be about 12 weeks. Regrowth should be fine and scant. Only occasional top ups will be required. Men’s backs will become hair free for about 8 weeks with the regrowth getting finer after 6 treatments. You are unlikely to become completely hair free. Men’s beards take lots of treatments as hair in the goatee area can be very persistent. Shaving rash and ingrown hairs respond well to just a few treatments, especially in Afro-Caribbean skin types, although the beard can look patchy.
Cost of laser hair removal
The initial consultation is free and you should come prepare with your questions to get the most out of the consultation. During the consultation you will also have a test patch done which is essential before your treatment can begin. These are to see how strong we can use the laser with your skin colouring.
